What is Primordial Sound and where does it come from?

Primordial sound refers to the most basic, original vibrations of the universe — the sounds that existed before language, before thought, before even form. In meditation, a primordial sound is used as a mantra — a sound or vibration you silently repeat to help you enter a deep, restful state of awareness. Primordial sound meditation is rooted in Vedic traditions of India, and it was brought into modern practice most notably by Deepak Chopra and his teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The idea is that the universe is made of vibrations, and these ancient sounds — often based on Sanskrit syllables — align you with those fundamental energies.

How it works

In a primordial sound meditation session, you:

  • Sit quietly

  • Close your eyes

  • Silently repeat your mantra (a specific sound, not a word with a meaning)

  • Gently return to the sound whenever your mind drifts

The sound helps move your awareness inward, beyond thought, into a peaceful, still place — a return to your true essence.
