Exploring advanced techniques
Once someone is comfortable with the basics of sitting, breath awareness, and mantra or mindfulness, there are many advanced meditation techniques that go deeper. These topics are NOT covered on the Mantra Seva website. However, for informational purposes, here are some powerful ones, each with a brief explanation:
Vipassana (Insight Meditation) – focuses on deep awareness of bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions as they arise. The goal is to see things as they truly are by observing impermanence and detaching from cravings and aversions. Advanced practice often involves long silent retreats and training in equanimity.
Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) – involves entering a hypnagogic state between wakefulness and sleep. The goal is deep healing, conscious rest, and reprogramming subconscious patterns. Advanced techniques include working with sankalpa (sacred intention) and subtle body awareness.
Kundalini Meditation – focuses on awakening dormant energy at the base of the spine and moving it upward through chakras. The goal is expanded consciousness and spiritual transformation. Advanced practices include breathwork (pranayama), mudras, bandhas (energy locks), and visualization.
Dzogchen or Manamudra (Tibetan Buddhism) – centers on the direct awareness of the "nature of mind" and resting in pure presence. The goal is to realize the non-dual nature of reality. Advanced practice involves letting go of all effort and recognizing awareness as already awakened.
Self-Inquiry (Atma Vichara) – Ramana Maharshi Style – this technique revolves around asking “Who am I?” and turning awareness inward. The goal is to realize the self beyond identity, ego, or thought. It requires deep stillness, radical honesty, and detachment from all mental content.
Transcendental Meditation (TM) – Advanced Techniques – this is a mantra-based practice that includes additional techniques after the foundation is established. The goal is deep rest and higher states of consciousness. Advanced TM programs include "Siddhi" techniques involving visualization and subtle energy work.
